Representatives of the Prague 5 district and Prague Airport signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation. Residents of the fifth district should be provided with a life without noise and interference with the environment.
The most important point of the Memorandum is the construction of a parallel railway, which the management of Prague 5 supports. It follows from Press Releases. A parallel runway will help in particular in increasing the safety of air traffic, as it will allow the use of one runway purely for take-offs and the other for landings.
The second runway will also reduce the negative impact of air traffic over the fifth urban area. In addition, according to the Memorandum, today’s secondary runway 12/30 will be canceled after the parallel runway with the main runway is operational and approved.
The new parallel runway should be located 1,525 meters south of the existing runway. It should be 3550 meters long and 60 meters wide. Its construction will cost about 9 billion crowns.
No one will be flying overhead at night
“At the time of the closure of the main runway this spring, for major repairs, we saw dozens, maybe hundreds, of desperate citizens searching to stop flying at night overhead. This is precisely why we support the implementation of parallel runways, because at night no one will be flying over the heads, that is, not even residents of other parts of the city,” said councilor for foreign relations and business support David Dušek (STAN).
The only other way to reduce noise in the vicinity of the airport is the complete exclusion of older and noisier aircraft from service or the economic disadvantage of noisy aircraft in the form of a noise fee. The solution would also be to allow night flights only by quiet aircraft types. A complete cancellation of night traffic is not possible in terms of the airport’s capacity.
The airport promised to compensate for the impact of traffic
Prague Airport has promised to at least partially compensate the residents of the five cities for the effects of its operation. V with operational possibilities has pledged to provide city districts in accordance with financial support, which, in addition to the environment, should also go to education, social care and housing.
“I welcome that Prague Airport has committed to financially support the language education of children from elementary schools in our district. It will also support areas such as the improvement of residential living conditions, social care and wants to contribute to the improvement of the environment and public space,” added the mayor of Prague 5 Municipality Renáta Zajíčková (ODS).
