Statistics: The average apartment in Central Bohemia is inhabited by almost half as many people as in Prague
A typical household consists of one, two, or three people. As a whole, those in Central Bohemia are among the most numerous on a nationwide scale; on the contrary, only one person lives in more than two fifths of Prague apartments. This is shown by findings from last year’s population, house and apartment census, for which the Czech Statistical Office is gradually publishing more details. The data therefore reflect the situation before the massive influx of refugees from war-torn Ukraine.

If across the country statistics within addition, who counted 10.1 million people living in almost 4.5 million inhabited apartments last year from March to May, calculated that 2.26 people lived together on average in the Czech Republic. However, in Prague (with 1,261,930 inhabitants living in 627,705 apartments), there were only two people; the exact value reaches 2.01. Conversely, the Central Bohemian region (1,346,510 people in 561,642 apartments) shows an average value of 2.40 people per apartment. This is among the highest in the inter-regional comparison; more numerous households recorded statistics only in the regions of Vysočina (2.45) and Zlínský (2.41).

Even within the region, the number of families in Prague-East is above average. There are 2.58 recalculated inhabitants in this district for each of the almost 73,000 counted apartments. Praha-západ is in a similar situation with almost 59 and a half thousand inhabited apartments: 2.56. Larger households were also recorded in Berounska (2.44 persons) and Benešovska (2.42). Conversely, the averages in the district with the largest cities in the region fell below 2.30: Kladno (2.28) and Mladá Boleslav (2.29).
One person in the apartment, but maybe six
Only one-person households are relatively numerous. Statistics in Prague counted 275,733 apartments where only one person lives – which represents 43.9 percent of all counted currently occupied apartments in the capital. In the Central Bohemian Region, it is 31.4 percent – and 176,554 real people. By the way: there are 1.6 million apartments (and thus also people) nationwide – and the share reaches 35.7 percent of all inhabited apartments. Even from this point of view, it is thus confirmed that households in Central Bohemia are among the most numerous in the republic. The largest number of flats with a single resident were reported in the census forms by people in Kladno (23,900), Prague-Východ (19,434) and Mladoboleslavsk (18,749). On the contrary, in the least populated Rakovnick, the statisticians counted only 7,017 of them. Prague and Central Bohemia together have a share of single-person households of 28.3 percent in the national comparison.

However, apartments that are normally occupied by six people or more are not an exception. In most Central Bohemian districts, their numbers reach the stove. Prague-east (1,370), Prague-west (1,240) and Kladensko (1,039) exceeded the thousand in the census. In this case, the wider metropolitan region (when the Central Bohemian Region had 10,261 apartments and Prague had 4,661 of them) occupies a share of 20.2 percent within the republic.
