Prague 5: Modern seniors from the Laundry Community Center use smartphones or tablets
21/09/2022 14:51 | Press Release
“Using a computer today belongs to the basic skills not only of the young and middle generation, but also of the elderly. In connection with the mass expansion of Internet coverage and mobility requirements, tablets and smartphones, or so-called smart phones, are becoming more and more popular, which are quickly replacing classic desktop computers and laptops among ordinary users and are currently the most widespread devices providing access to the Internet,” says councilor JUDr . Petr Lachnit.
Seniors were already interested in the issue of tablets and smartphones. Due to the long tradition of popular courses for working with PCs and digital technology in the Laundry Community Center, the increase in the use of smartphones and tablets has been very noticeable in the senior population for several years. Ninety percent of all users of computer technology, not only among seniors, want to use it primarily as a source of information, entertainment and a communication tool.

And it fulfills all these requirements for a smartphone, in addition, it is multifunctional, compact and easily portable, it can last a long time in operation on battery, thanks to which it increases its mobility even more. another reason for using a tablet for seniors is the maximum simplicity and intuitive control, the absence of a keyboard and, above all, a mouse, which are difficult to control, especially for complete beginners from among the seniors. In other words, seniors are very interested in the possibility of using smartphones and tablets.
That is why the community center has been running courses on working with a tablet/smartphone under the guidance of experienced lecturers for the past several years. Those of the course participants, divided according to the level of previous knowledge, are familiar with all the possibilities and specifics of using these touch devices, the difference between working on a classic desktop PC or laptop and a lot of other practical knowledge. In addition, they try everything themselves directly on their own or borrowed devices, and of course there is room for specific questions “from practice”.
“The perception of seniors towards each other and society as a whole has been changing very quickly in recent years. The earlier image of a senior as an old person with limited interests, spending time alone at home, or with his family, and not interested in current events and the world around him, is already a thing of the past. The current reality is rather the opposite – seniors are very active even at an advanced age, they have a lot of interests, they travel and are interested in everything new, they have a desire to communicate and socialize not only with their peers. They are also attracted by the latest technical conveniences, which make it easier to navigate in today’s complicated world, and it is enough to be in social contact to a greater extent than ever before. In particular, widespread smart phones or tablets are a typical example of hi-tech devices, but their principle of control and use returns to innate human intuition. This makes them, for example, much more acceptable for seniors, who otherwise suffer from a certain fear of modern technology. Therefore, their growth in the senior population in recent years is understandable, and I am glad that the seniors from our community center are among the pioneers in this area,” says councilor JUDr. Petr Lachnit.
