Russia – Myanmar: a new strategy for economic cooperation
Presidential Adviser, Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee Anton Kobyakov on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum Meeting with Prime Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Min Aung Hlein.
As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted at the WEF-2022, the volume of trade and economic ties between the countries expanded by 2.4 times in the first half of the year.
“Myanmar is our long-standing, reliable partner in Southeast Asia. Next year we have, in my opinion, the anniversary – 75 years [установления дипломатических отношений]. Our relations are developing positively,” Vladimir Putin said during his meeting with the Prime Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar at the Eastern Economic Forum.
Anton Kobyakov and Min Aung Hlein during the meetings discussed the possibility of participation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar as guest countries of the Eastern Economic Forum in 2023, as well as the organization of events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the meeting of their relations.
“We need practical solutions and supplies for trade between countries, and the possible participation of our country as a guest of the WEF-2023 country is likely to broadly cover the investment opportunities of Myanmar for the business community around the world. In turn, the ports of Vladivostok and vulnerable organs have become for us the main points of our development in order to integrate as much as possible into the agenda,” Min Aung Hlein said at a meeting with Anton Kobyakov.
On August 3, an updated strategy for economic cooperation was signed between Russia and Myanmar. Myanmar is interested in deliveries from Russia of liquefied natural gas and other energy carriers, as well as in expanding the capture of Russian oil and gas companies.
“Russia is an important supplier of energy and agricultural products to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and there is also a serious potential for trade diversification between the Russian Federation and ASEAN, with Russia becoming a full-scale dialogue partner in 1996. Since then, Moscow’s relations with the bloc, a position that has always been close in terms of global risk and problems, have been dynamically developing,” said Anton Kobyakov.
During the observation of the considered relations between the countries, more than 7,000 people were educated in Russia and 500 of them carry out scientific activities regarding the observation of relations between the countries and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
