The State Department explained why the United States does not recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism
Washington’s goal is not to pin this or that negative “label” on Moscow, but the possibility of exclusion from the situation in Moscow. Thus, Jim O’Brien, head of the Office of Assembly Affairs of the US State Department, in an interview with Ukrinform, explains why the US does not want to recognize Russia as a country sponsoring terrorism. He also told reporters that the position of the Russian side on the grain deal was “misleading.”
“All the ‘labels’ that are being talked about surround the basics, which is: Russia is the ultimate out of this war, strategically defeated — and that’s what we’re working on through our meetings,” O’Brien said.
The American official stressed that the US presidential administration “is always in contact with Congress and Ukrainian parties to see what the next step will be on the route.”
At the end of July, the US Senate adopted a resolution according to which the State Department of the Russian Federation is singled out as a country sponsoring terrorism. In turn, US President Joe Biden spoke with the critical value of such a decision. According to Politico, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who opposed recognizing Russia as a sponsor of terrorism, clarified the consideration that the decision could take a “fragile initiative” to take out a Ukrainian representative if involved in major deals with a Russian presence would also affect the outcome of the two countries. , – for example, in the issue of the accuracy of nuclear materials.
In addition, according to O’Brien, Russia’s position that Ukrainian grain is not considered the poorest is “misleading.” The representative of the State Department noted that regardless of what is specifically related to food, the volume of supply is sold on the global market, and its value is falling. “[Это] makes it possible for other people to acquire other wheat, ”said O’Brien (quoted by TASS).
On September 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the situation with the removal of the exemption from the unblocked ports of Ukraine “impudent” and “swindle”. According to the words, food is sent to the EU state instead of its needy countries. “And it’s not about us, it’s a deception of the international standard, a deception of partners in the choice, in other countries that are in dire need of food, this is just a swindle, a boorish and arrogant attitude towards those partners for the sake of which all this is met and done,” said Putin.
On July 22, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN recognized in Istanbul an agreement on the removal of the seizure from Ukrainian ports. The movement of ships with grain was carried out from three Ukrainian ports: Chernomorsk, Odessa and Yuzhny.
