The Government of Romania approved a memorandum to streamline the traffic of goods and passengers in the border area with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
According to a Government release, to reduce waiting times and delays in traffic, and eliminate blockages in cross-border sectors, the memorandum provides for a set of measures aimed at both creating the existing transport and customs infrastructures, as well as their development. Also, these measures capitalize on the high potential of cargo transit to and from Ukraine, to and from the Port of Constanța.
The executive claims that these measures, which will contribute to the efficiency of the transport of goods and people during the armed conflict in Ukraine, as well as in the perspective of the reconstruction of the neighboring state, refer to: * the opening/reopening of the border points with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, as well as ensuring accessibility to them; * increasing the transit capacities for goods between Romania, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova at the existing border points, through the construction of new taxiways and new parking spaces; * increasing the capacity of goods transit between Romania, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova on the railway infrastructure; * interventions to increase traffic speed and eliminate speed restrictions through repair and renovation interventions on the following traffic sections: Satu Mare – Halmeu, Campulung la Tisa – Valea Vișeului – Salva, Vicșani – Suceava Nord, Ungheni Prut – Nicolina , Fălciu – Bârlad, Giurgiulesti Galati – Brateș; * increasing the capacity to process cargo traffic by the institutions with duties at the border point, by ensuring the necessary equipment and personnel.
Also, for the railway sector, it is proposed to provide equipment and increase the number of personnel with duties in traffic management; * equipping border points/stations with equipment for performing physical controls such as: scanners and walkways; * the establishment of an interministerial coordination committee, headed by the head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery or a state adviser within the Chancellery, from the composition of the coordination activity to include secretaries of state or heads of institutions, from the ministries/institutions with attributions in the area and the implementation of the measures. proposed, committee that will be established by decision of the prime minister; * testing the list of needs for managing the process of smoothing the transit of goods in Ukraine, which Romania will forward to all external partners who have expressed their intention to support.
