West of Lyon, the battle against Joux’s quarry resumes
On September 1, 2022, the public inquiry into the opening of a quarry in Joux, west of Lyon, began. As of September 3, the associations affected an environment-destroying project.
The standoff resumed against the “concrete projects” west of Lyon. This September 1, 2022, the public inquiry on the opening of Joux’s career restarted. Paused for ten years, this project, extending over 22 hectares, is now resuming. 17 hectares would be devoted to the pure exploitation of the quarry and the rest to a logistics activity. But the opponents fear to see the career grow.
“What worries us is that 50 hectares are reserved in the local urban plan (PLU), adopt Sylvain Morel, peasant from Joux, installed opposite the project. We therefore expect a demand for expansion in 30 years. After that, the hill will be flattened. »
Member from Acrosa (association against the road between The Savages and the A89) plague against the environmental damage caused by this file carried by Vinci and Eurovia. According to him, there are already two other active aggregate quarries five and ten kilometers away as the crow flies. Why add one?
“Originally, the latter was planned for the construction of the A89. Or, they didn’t need it to build the highway…”, he breathes.
In all, between 50 and 60 trucks are supposed to pass through the town, which represents “a heavyweight every four minutes” with round trips, underlines Sylvain Morel. Vinci, for its part, highlights that the quarry should supply the construction market at the local level.
West of Lyon, actions still there against concrete projects
To counter this project, the opponents organized a first demonstration on the weekend of September 3. Today, his attempt to inform the inhabitants as well as possible often exceeds the complexity of the file. A petition, having collected 900 signatureswas spawned.
For a month, the public inquiry created at the beginning of September can accommodate contributions of every citizen. The municipal councils of the surrounding municipalities will also give their opinion on the project. Opponents wishing to bring elected representatives of the West Rhone community (Horn). They hope to receive the support of the mayor of Tarare, Bruno Peylachon (various right), or even the president of the Cor and former local deputy, Patrice Verchère (LR).
After the closure of the public inquiry, the investigating commissioner will be responsible for rendering an opinion. The authorization of exploitation will have to be given, or not, by the prefect.
Massive fighting west of Lyon
This struggle is rooted in a field where mobilizations are already numerous. To the west of Lyon, opposition is flourishing against concrete projects.
Last year, the Quicury association succeeded in putting a logistics zone installation project on hold, supported by local elected officials. Via the quarry site, the members of Acrosa also feared that a road link project between the A89 and Amplepuis would reappear.
“Once the road has been developed to get to the quarry, it will be easier to make the connection between Amplepuis and the A89”, we analyzed then on the side of Acrosa.
For financial reasons, several elected officials including the mayor of Tarare, Bruno Peylachon, have set aside the A89 project. The latter, however, has not given up on construction projects in the area of Smadeor, defended by Quicury. He always defends the economic interest of developing this sector. No doubt, the showdown is far from over.
