Vienna: Sports Center at Eisring Sud – Sports & Facilities
The new multi-sports center a Favorite (one of the ten districts of the city of Vienna, in the southern area of the Austrian capital) was built with the complete renovation of the existing ice rink and the construction of an outdoor ice rink, giving life to a multifunctional facility for the sport and leisure.
Although at least 500 new apartments and a supermarket are under construction in the area, sport is set to remain the main use of the neighborhood.
The old lifts of the Eisring Sud have been brought up to current standards. On the south side of the ice ring dating back to the early 1980s, a two-story building was built as well as spaces for an energy-efficient ice plant.
To the ground floor, the building includes the new entrance hall with a shop, skate rental, toilets. To the upper piano there are changing rooms, a snack area and a room for street dance.
The building is set up according to the most recent international criteria for the creation of spaces for sport, where sporting and social use come together. With its 2000 square meters of rooms with a height of 7 meters, trendy sports can be hosted comand beach volleyball, streetball, indoor football, table tennis, bouldering, badminton. At the same time, the complex has a socio-cultural function, being also a meeting place since there is enough space between the freely programmable areas to meet and relax.
In the outdoor area there are numerous activity spaces that adapt to the surrounding area and invite people to stroll. This also opens up space for all ages and promotes not only a sporting and cultural exchange, but also an intergenerational one.
Sustainability and energy efficiency
The new wing connecting the indoor and outdoor ice facilities was built according to the highest energy efficiency standards. The outer shells of the new buildings are built in a mix of reinforced concrete and wood, which combines the advantages of concrete constructions in terms of storage masses, with the advantages of wood as a sustainable raw material. The roofs were designed to be green in order to prevent urban build-up.
In the summer, the new buildings are cooled by nighttime ventilation, and the dome skylights on the roof keep out the summer heat by means of a heat-stop system. In winter, let in enough light to reduce the need for heating.
The system of ice recovery has been updated. Previously, the residual heat released from the ice-making process was lost without being able to reuse it. With the new energy concept, the building and the connecting wing will be heated and supplied with hot water from autumn to spring thanks to the activation of the building components. In the future, the quantities of energy will also be to power the supermarket which is sufficient in the design phase and other new buildings.
With this concept, you save up to 226 tons of CO2 per year and there are therefore no costs for the energy needs of the new building for heating and hot water.
For the preparation of the ice surfaces, select service provider has integrated the concrete base of the ice rink with a low-cost mat, need to dismantle and replace without the cooling pipes. Existing panels were also adapted, as well as the installation of a water-cooled refrigeration machine with heat recovery to meet part of the building’s heating and hot water supply needs.
