The First Republic functionalist colony of Baba will be reconstructed. Road surfaces, technical infrastructure will be renewed and a new information system for tourists will be created. The management of the Prague municipality has already approved the study according to which the colony will be repaired. Marek Vácha, spokesman for the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), which prepared the study for the city, told ČTK today. Baba was built at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s.
“Although Baba is designated as a heritage-protected area and the architecture here is very well preserved, the public spaces have lost their original charm over the past decades, have become quite run down and are about to be completely renovated. The conceptual study was prepared primarily for the purpose of coordinating all interests in the area, i.e. historical, architectural and urban planning and the interests of local residents,” said Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček (TOP 09).
In addition to the repair of road surfaces, squares and infrastructure reconstruction, a new rainwater management system will be created. Pedestrian paths will be barrier-free and pedestrian connections with neighboring parts of the city will be improved.
The study also recommended the creation of an information center and educational circuit that will serve tourists and include a navigation system and villa markings. “The goal is to create such a background for visitors to the housing estate that they are disturbed as little as possible by local residents,” said Vácha.
Baba has been an urban heritage zone since 1993 and in 2020, together with other functionalist colonies of the Werkbund, they received the European Heritage Label.
