Andrij Jurkevyč became the new music director of the State Opera
The Ukrainian conductor has experience in Lviv, Odessa, Warsaw, Moldova, Germany and Italy.
Andriy Jurkevych was born in Zborov, Galicia, studied orchestral conducting in Lviv u Yuri Luciva. In 1999, he completed his studies and in the same year also received a special prize at Turčak’s national competition in Kiev. His other teachers included Jack Kaspszyk, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Donato Renzetti AND Alberto Zedda.
The position of music director already before State Opera in Prague held in National Opera in Odessa, National Opera in Warsaw AND Moldovan National Theater of Opera and Ballet. He has also been a resident conductor since 1996 Lviv National Opera. However, he has guested in opera houses throughout Europe, including for example Vienna State Opera, State Opera BerlinMadrid Theater Teatro Real and others.
Jurkevyč’s first performances in his new capacity will be two popular Italian operas, by Verdi La Traviata September 3 and Puccini Tosca September 4th. In the first mentioned performance, among other things, a soprano will debut in the main role Lucie Kaňková. Furthermore, the State Opera will put on an operetta performance in September after a long time Ball at the Savoy Hotel composer Paul Abraham directed Martin Čičvák and by studying music Jan Kučera. This performance is part of the project Music non grata, reminiscent of the music of composers uncomfortable with the Nazi regime.
