Prague 6 opened attic buildings in two schools | PRAGUE 6 | News
Spejbl and Hurvínek welcomed the first-graders at Náměstí Svobody 2 and Emy Destinnová elementary schools. For both schools, the first day of school was also the moment when the new buildings, which the city district had built to increase the capacity of both schools, were ceremonially opened.
“We had two huge uninsulated plots of land here and it would be a shame not to use them, so we decided to replace these classrooms with new school spaces and not just core classrooms. The capacity will increase, there are now three new core classrooms in each school, which, in relation to vocational classrooms, does not reduce the quality of education in any way. On the contrary, I would say,” said the Prague 6 municipal councilor, Marie Kubíková.
Construction started a year ago. For school staff and pupils, this meant spending the past school year teaching in limited conditions.
“The result is excellent. We have acquired new premises, beautiful premises. We have acquired specialist classrooms, a chemistry classroom, a polytechnic classroom, a ceramics workshop, a training kitchen, two general classrooms and four smaller classrooms for teaching languages, a study room and a library. It is important, that the school has become barrier-free, that basically we can accommodate children who are handicapped in some way,” says the director of Emma Destinnová Primary School, Ota Bažant.
In a similar situation is Náměstí Svobody 2 elementary school. Here, too, thanks to the addition of an attic, both general and specialist classrooms were created.
“There are five classical classrooms in total, in which, of course, specialist subjects will also be taught. Among them, for example, are a science laboratory, a history and a geography classroom. And in addition to these five classical large classrooms, we have one smaller language classroom. We have a specialized computer classroom and also a large music and drama hall with a library. We were also able to finally return some of the teachers’ offices to the extension, and there are also three new offices in the new extension,” says the director of ZŠ náměstí Svobody 2, Michaela Rybářová.
The space between the two buildings is still awaiting revitalization. However, it will be preceded by, for example, the construction of a kitchen in Emy Destinnová Elementary School.
