Michlovský shined in the Top 77 wines, he has the best collection for the fourth time
What about customer reactions?
In addition to the overall winner, other positions are also clear. Fourteen samples won the highest award. The Štěpán Maňák Winery from Žádovice in the Hodonín region has the best collection in the Slovak subregion. It scores regularly in the Top 77 wines. “After winning, hundreds of customers will not automatically flock to us, but experts or wine lovers will take notice of the award. Every year the conditions, the weather and the grapes are different. I’m always curious what people will say about the wine and how it will taste to them,” discovered winery owner Štěpán Maňák.
A joy to behold: winemakers have lent a face to their wines
The Italian winery Tenuta shined in foreign competitions, including five wines, Santa Maria received an award. “From a foreign perspective, it was very weak this year. Only two wineries applied. But the winning Tenuta Santa Maria captivated the committee and all the wines entered received a high rating,” said David Mádr.
Natural for the second time
For the second time this year, the category of natural wines was part of the competition. It received five stars out of approximately twenty-five rated two. In both cases, it was Veltlínské grüner from the ZD Sedlec winery. “These are not samples for everyone, but rather for true connoisseurs, which fortunately is increasing. The wines are heavier, contain elements of minerality and are more spicy. Their production is also much more complicated,” explained ZD Sedlec cellar master Ctirad Králík.
Pálava series? Overused and unnatural dialect, South Moravians agreed
According to him, success is more valuable also because the competition is getting higher. “We’ve been winning medals from competitions since the 1990s, but over time the competition has increased, for example because the quality of the family winery has improved,” pointed out Králík.
Vinselekt Michlovský won the award for the best collection of wines in this year’s Top 77 wine competition. This year’s edition of Top 77 wines remained without the winners of the best collections from the Znojmo and Velkpavlovice sub-regions. None of these localities had an award from an award. “Winers who entered six or more samples can enter the fight for the best collection. The condition is at least one wine,” explained Dan Mádr.
A change compared to previous years occurred in the evaluation method. Four expert commissions judged the wines at the Belcredi chateau in Líšní three days in a row. The organizers will use the system for the next year as well. “The big task for next year is for us to find a challenger for Mr. Michlovský,” said David Mádr.
Many wines, which the jury awarded eighty-seven points from the last place, did not reach the award. At the same time, it is enough for the sample to get more than eighty-four points to be rated with the lowest three stars. “It’s because we only have thirty-three percent of the wines listed as award-winning. That’s why we are seriously considering changing this status next year so that more wines can be awarded,” said competition director Mádr.
New wineries are also entering the competition. This year, for example, Vilavin Dobré Pole, which was particularly interesting in the way it was processed. “It is a unique concept of a six-story gravity winery. We will hear a lot more about their wines,” says Mádr. In this method, the raw materials are moved between individual operations thanks to gravity, thus ensuring processing without pumps.
The ceremonial announcement of the results and the gala tasting will take place today from seven o’clock in the evening in the Besední dům in Brno.
