Title candidate SG Flensburg-Handewitt started the new season of the Handball Bundesliga with a win. The Schleswig-Holsteiner won on Thursday evening with 31:30 (17:13) at HSV Hamburg. TSV Hannover-Burgdorf defeated SC DHfK Leipzig 25:22 (15:10).
In the north duel in Hamburg it looked like the favored guests should be able to pull away after almost a quarter of an hour. Teitur Einarsson secured the SG’s 7:4 lead with a speed counterattack. However, Simon Hald received his second two-minute penalty shortly afterwards (13 ‘). Since Johannes Bitter improved in goal at HSVH, the defense in front of him worked better and the new Dutch playmaker Dani Baijens impressed with good passes and finishes, the score was 13:13 in the 23rd minute.
The remaining minutes of the first round belonged to the SG again. Goalkeeper Kevin Möller now took away a few throws and the guests scored better up front again. So it went into the dressing room with a 17:13, it was the first four-goal lead.
Dramatic final phase in Hamburg
Twelve minutes after the restart, the party was open again – the hosts were only one goal (20:21) behind. However, the Hanseatic League had to accept a weakening of personnel shortly afterwards: pivot Niklas Weller saw the red card and the blue card as well. The latter is shown in the event of serious fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct, and it also initiates disciplinary proceedings. The following had happened: Weller had been worked on by Flensburg’s Jim Gottfridsson in a circle and had extended his elbow to the back – to the Swede’s larynx, which then fell to the ground.
Hamburg was not deterred by this. Frederik Bo Andersen scores to 25:25 (49th). It came to a head. One minute before the end it was 30:30 with ball possession for the guests. Four seconds before the end of the game, Johannes Golla scored 31:30 against the hosts who were outnumbered. HSVH coach Torsten Jansen immediately took the time out. The compensation was no longer possible. The best scorers of the game were Golla with eight goals for Flensburg and Jacob Lassen, who scored seven goals for the hosts.
TSV Hannover-Burgdorf with a strong first half
With a strong Dario Quenstedt between the posts, TSV Hannover-Burgdorf found the game better and better after an early 2-0 deficit. The “warriors” initially presented perfectly with a full 5:0 run. And after 18 minutes it was even 10:5. Although the Saxons came a little closer again, the team of TSV trainer Christian Prokop picked up again and was 15:10 ahead halfway through the game.
The Lower Saxony could not settle further after the restart. Even more: Leipzig came close. Six and a half minutes before the end it was only 23:21 for the hosts. But the Prokop team now showed good nerves and brought the advantage to win the first two points to the finish. Newcomer Maximilian Gerbl was the best pitcher in Lower Saxony with eight goals.
