Austria: Per capita consumption of animal products fell again in 2021
3.87 million tons of milk from cows, sheep and goats (±0% compared to 2020), 2.24 billion eggs (+3%) and 5,000 tons of fish (+6%) were sold to the domestic and foreign markets generated. In the case of meat, the gross in-house production (in slaughter weight, ie with bones and fat) was 905,000 t, 1% below the level of the previous year.
A total of 793,000 t of meat (-2%), 698,000 t of drinking milk including yoghurt and sour milk drinks (-6%), 208,000 t of cheese (-3%), 48,000 t of butter (-1%), 2, 1 billion eggs (-1%) and 71,000 tons of fish (+9%) available.
The degree of self-sufficiency provides information on the extent to which domestic production is able to cover domestic consumption. This reached 178% for drinking milk (including yoghurt), 147% for beef and veal, 118% for cheese (including processed cheese) and 108% for pork.
The degree of self-sufficiency for the following products was below 100%, ie the demand could not be completely covered from domestic production: Eggs (92%), poultry meat (78%), butter (72%) and fish (7%).
The calculated per capita consumption in 2021 was 77.9 kg of milk, 23.2 kg of cheese (including processed cheese), 5.4 kg of butter, 14.5 kg of eggs (equivalent to 233 pieces) and 88.5 kg of meat. Of this, 58.9 kg of meat was available for human consumption, the remaining third of per capita consumption was accounted for e.g. B. on bones or was processed into dog and cat food.
Imports of meat (355,000 t; +6%), drinking milk (72,000 t; +2%), cheese (133,000 t; +2%) and fish (79,000 t; +12%) were recorded to cover domestic demand. In the same period, 532,000 tonnes of meat (+7%), 562,000 tonnes of drinking milk (−4%) and 170,000 tonnes of cheese (+9%) were exported.
Agricultural foreign trade volume continues to rise Compared to 2020, the agricultural foreign trade volume (both plant and animal products) increased from 25.5 billion to 27.7 billion euros. This corresponds to an 8.1% share of the total foreign trade volume, which will amount to 344.0 billion euros in 2021.
The value of agricultural imports rose from EUR 12.8 billion to EUR 13.9 billion, and that of exports from EUR 12.8 billion to EUR 13.8 billion. The main trading partners were the Member States of the European Union with a share of 83% in imports and 74% in exports.
