Brno wants to compete for the title of European Capital of Culture (ECC) for 2028. The Moravian metropolis can start fighting for the status after submission of applications. The Brno representatives decided to deliver the document in a non-traditional way and will transport it to Prague by bicycle.
A determined delegation of cyclists left the center of Brno on Monday and is scheduled to undertake a three-day journey along side roads that will lead the peloton to the capital. The formation is headed by the Brno councilor for culture Marek Fischer (Pirates), according to which the application for the EHMK title is primarily focused on reducing regional inequality or repairing the fairgrounds.
“For example, we want to find a use for the White House, we also propose a format for an international platform, which has supported the Brno International Graphic Design Biennale for a long time and provided space for other Brno biennales as well,” Fischer explained.
Before the paper arrives at the building of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic on Maltézské náměstí in Prague, it will travel 230 kilometers on Fišer’s back. The target is scheduled to be reached on Wednesday afternoon, which is the day before the deadline. “For submitting the application form, we deliberately chose the form of delivery by bicycle, which is a sign of the cycling tradition that Brno has profiled in the past as the organizer of championships and important races in amateur, track and road cycling,” the program director of Brno 2028 said about the matter Marcela Strakova.

Two cities, one Czech and one French, will become the European capital of culture in 2028. Brno competes domestically with Broumov, České Budějovice and Liberec. The winner will receive an opportunity for cultural development and wider promotion of the city. The status of the high number of visitors helped the previous selected municipalities. The titular city will also receive 1.5 million euros.
This year’s EHMK are Lithuania’s Kaunas, Luxembourg’s Esch-sur-Alzette and Serbia’s Novi Sad. In 2000, the title was also held by Prague, in 2015 it was Pilsen. If the center of South Moravia succeeds in the competition, they will have to fulfill individual goals that will start in 2024 and culminate in 2028.
