Nikita Mikhalkov said that Russia should not nominate his film for an Oscar in 2022.
Nikita Mikhalkov left the Russian Oscar committee, which selects films for submissions to the main American film award.
Chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation Nikita Mikhalkov told TASSthat he is against the nomination of Russian films for the Oscars. “It seems to me that the choice of a film that will explore Russia in a country that, in fact, now denies the presence of Russia, is simply pointless,” he said.
The autumn Russian Oscar Committee is to nominate at the meeting a Russian film from those that will be in commercial distribution in 2022.
At the same time, Nikita Mikhalkov himself entered the history of Russian cinema as a director of films that more often than others claimed an Oscar. These are “Urga – the territory of love” (1992), “12” (2007), “Burnt by the Sun – 2” (2011), “Sunstroke” (2015), and also “The Barber of Siberia” (1998), disqualified due to non-compliance with the formal terms of release.
