In September, the German-language primary school in Debrecen will ring the bell – with photos
Debrecen – The Debrecen German Primary School was established by renovating and transforming the former lower school building of the Vénkert Primary School.
The establishment of the German-language elementary school is justified by the fact that more and more German companies have settled in the city in the past period. Among others, BMW, Krones, Schaeffler, Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions (formerly known as IT Services), Deufol, Bürkle, Vitesco Technologies, Diehl Aviation, Manz AG, Amazonen-Werke and Thyssenkrupp also chose Debrecen.
Mayor László Papp said at the inauguration of the Debrecen German Primary School: the handing over of the institution is extremely important, as it is proof of the processes taking place in the city in recent years.
– This school best shows how closely related the different areas of life in the city are
said the mayor. – Economic development shows serious results, but it is necessary to keep up with this in other areas as well. And education is of prime importance.
The increasingly internationalization of the city’s economic life brings with it the internationalization of education as well. László Papp reminded us that this is why the International School was created.
Papp: from September, there will be only Hungarian children in the starting class, but they expect that you will later partly confirm the tendency of German families to come to Debrecen for BMW and other German companies as well.
The government also supported the plans of the Debrecen city government and provided HUF 1 billion 308 million gross for the school. The support is higher than the cost of remodeling the building, so it is also possible to purchase equipment.
Member of Parliament Lajos Kósa added: the German school is needed because the city’s economic development requires it, since
one of the first questions of German managements settling in is usually: is there a school where their children can go.
– This in itself justifies the existence of the school. However, if we look at ourselves from a little further, we can know that German settlement has been continuous in our country throughout history, so the Germans are the largest minority in Hungary – emphasized Lajos Kósa.
He pointed out: nowadays a new wave of settlement can be observed. One of the reasons for this was mentioned by a government politician: the Germans today see the government as a country like it was 40-50 years ago. That is, it is free from completely failed integration problems.
In the educational institution with the German system, education will basically be conducted in German. Hungarian students can study literature and grammar in their mother tongue, while foreign children can also learn Hungarian as a foreign language. The children receive a German certificate after completing a class. Students admitted to the school will not have to pay tuition.
Miklós Egri, the chairman of the board of trustees of the General Education Center of the Hungarian Germans, said: this is the umpteenth school that has been founded, and a total of 1,200 children are trained in Hungary.
The school will open its doors on September 1, and a first class will start. It is maintained by the General Cultural Center of the Hungarian Germans.
