Basketball will bounce in the heart of Debrecen
As we have become accustomed to in recent years, at the end of August this year, 3×3 basketball will play the main role in front of the Great Church. The city of Cívis hosts the U18 World Championship and the World Tour Masters tournament. The former lasts from Tuesday to Sunday, and the latter will take place on Saturday and Sunday. In connection with the events, the organizers called a press conference on Monday afternoon.
Diána Széles, deputy mayor of Debrecen – who also plays basketball – is especially fond of the city’s basketball events.
In the past 15 years, we have had so many events in the city that we couldn’t count them all. We have had a 3×3 world event continuously for eight years, and this is due to the fact that this sport is loved in Debrecen. There are many children playing this ball game in the city, who have an exemplary background behind them, so we can highlight the talents quickly and accompany them all the way to the front line
said the city manager. He added that such events would not be possible without the logistics provided by the city.
Debrecen has been there since the beginning
Maximiliano Palheiro, head of the 3×3 division of the International Basketball Federation, considers it a great achievement that the sport was able to present itself at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. According to the specialist, Debrecen also has a lot to offer, as the city has been hosting 3×3 events since the very beginning, in 2015.
István Becsky, the chairman of the organizing committee, said that the event will be free of charge this year as usual. – We hope that the rain will spare us, because we want to stay in front of the Great Temple as long as possible. We are proud to be able to organize the competitions in front of this iconic building every year, he said.
This year, sustainability was also important from an organizational point of view, their joint mission with the association is to minimize the harmful impact of the event on the environment.
It’s a tough group
In the U18 boys team, several people are connected to Debrecen, as the coach is József Lekli, who is the former assistant coach of the DEAC basketball team. Two players are students of the DEAC Basketball Academy: Brúnó Hegedűs and Bogdán Gadus. The latter said in relation to the competition that he wanted to enjoy the tournament. He believes that there is a great opportunity for them to play in front of the home crowd and we want to encourage them. He considers the group difficult, but he promised that he will not go out on the field against anyone with his hands up.
