Prague Zoo: The first cub in the new gorilla pavilion
8/17/2022 11:54 a.m. | Press Release
Brazz’s cat cub was born in the Prague Zoo last Wednesday in the early hours of the morning, and according to the keepers, he is doing well. The new gorilla pavilion being prepared, called the Dja Reserve, which will be opened at the end of September, has the first inhabitant born here.
“The new gorilla pavilion hasn’t even opened yet and it already has its first cub – little Brazzo the cat! You can come and see it for the first time in seven weeks during the grand opening on September 28,” invites Prague Zoo director Miroslav Bobek to the latest addition. “There are other cubs in the pavilion, namely the cape guerez and of course our male gorilla Ajabu. But the little cat is the first offspring born here,” explains Bobek.

The cub was born two weeks ago to the eight-year-old female Anastasia, the father is a year-older male Malik. Brazzo cats are the only representatives of their genus, often forming monogamous pairs. The male Malik is also the father of the cub’s older siblings – the two-year-old female Mimo and the one-year-old male Malanga. They are already completely independent, but they will stay with their parents until they reach sexual maturity at the age of five.
“The cub is drinking and vital. Although he stays on his mother’s belly without ceasing, he is now interested in his surroundings. His experienced mother Anastasia takes exemplary care of him – she cleans his fur, eyes and nose with her tongue and stays away from other group members with him for now,” praises the maternal care of primate keeper Martin Vojáček.
With its pink skin and monochrome coloring, the week-old cub is so far very unlike its adult parents, which are characterized by dark skin, olive fur, a white beard and an orange headband. It should be completely “colored” in three years at the earliest, but in six months he will be able to boast of a white beard, which his older siblings also already have.
At the moment, the Prague cats are also getting to know their “neighbor” in the largest exhibition. The male northern talapoin originally from the Wrocław zoo, which breeders named Šklíba based on his typical expression, has been getting used to his new home here since Friday. In the next week, he will be joined by three females from the Africa pavilion.
“The settlement of the pavilion is far from over, in the coming weeks we are expecting new members of the gorilla family group – male Kisumu and female Duni, but after their arrival from the Netherlands, the brushy Cameroonian, rust-brown pigs are also going through the undercarriage quarantine, which will share the enclosure with the Brazza cats ,” primate curator Jan Mengr outlines the further housing of the pavilion.
Seven weeks ago, three male and three female brown bats also inhabited their exhibition, and on Thursday they expanded the ranks of new inhabitants of the vivarium – female golden nephilim spiders, terrible insect bugs, small African decorative frogs and Congolese, spotted and yellow-bellied goldheads, along with many Dja Reserve will present the Prague Zoo to the public on September 28 on the occasion of its 91st anniversary celebration.
