Denmark will give infants the right to change gender
Children under the age of zero can have the right to change their legal gender in Denmark. This means that the child can change the gender it is listed with in the Danish population register.
This is reported by several Danish media. It was Jyllands-Posten who mentioned the matter first.
The proposal is expected to be considered in October and forms part of the Danish government’s new LGBT+ plan. If it is introduced, Denmark will become one of the countries in Europe with the most open LGBT policy, according to Jyllands-Posten.
Although the proposal allows for not having an age limit for changing the legal gender, it appears that children under the age of 15 will need consent from the parents.
Today, the age limit is 18 years.
Proposal before
It is not the first time that a Danish government has proposed changing the law for who can change legal gender.
Also years ago, the then social democratic government tried to introduce the same proposal. The proposal was partially well received by the supporting parties.
The Danish Ethics Council also issued a Statement on the first proposal. They then recommended lowering the age limit to somewhere between 10 and 12 years.
– It must be considered doubtful that a child who has not reached puberty can understand the basic reasons for and the consequences of changing gender legally, the council concluded according to Danish TV 2.
Disagree with the proposal
Well, the proposal has been put forward again, but not everyone seems to agree with the proposal this time either.
The Conservative Party says they totally disagree with the proposal. This is what the party’s minister for equality, Birgitte Bergmann, tells Jyllands-Posten.
According to the newspaper, Bergmann believes that a child must be allowed to be a child, and that if you are not old enough to decide on your own bedtime, you should not be able to change your legal gender.
