the three universities of Toulouse among the 25 best in France
The 2022 edition of the Shanghai ranking, which categorizes the best universities in the world, was published on Monday August 15. Four French faculties are part of it, including the Toulouse trio.
The University of Toulouse among the very last shanghai ranking ? Yes. Created in 2003 by China’s Jiao Tong University, this list has been compiled every year since 2009 by Shanghai Ranking, a consulting firm. The first 100 faculties are ranked one by one, then the ranking is done in increments of 50.
The two American universities Harvard and Stanford recognized without surprise at the top of the podium; closely followed by British universities (Oxford, Cambridge, etc.). In France, 28 of the 74 French universities are in the ranking.
What about Toulouse? Paul-Sabatier University regains its 2020 score and ranks in the world top 300. In 2021, she had fallen into the category 301-400… Which is the case for Toulouse 1 Capitole this year.
Finally, a good surprise for INSA Toulouse. The engineering school that entered the distinguished ranking during the previous edition moved up a category and climbed between 701st and 800th place worldwide. “This corresponds to an increase in power of INSA in the scientific field”says Philippe Raimbault, president of the Federal University of Toulouse.
Thus, the three Toulouse universities rank among the top 25 nationally.
These are rather good results for these three establishments. It is a form of recognition for the work that is done, knowing that the criteria are very research-oriented, especially that of the hard sciences.
Philippe Raimbault, President of the Federal University of Toulouse
The University of Montpellier ranks for the fourth consecutive year in the top 200 in the world. The Montpellier Business School, which entered the list last year, is in the top 900.
Last January, the Director General of the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) announced the project to create a new university bringing together the TSE, the Paul-Sabatier University and the ISAE-SupAéro, in order to “deal with the announced downgrading of Toulouse”.
A sensitive project for more than a year, and supported by the Occitanie region. The presidents of other Toulouse higher education establishments denounced “brutality” dunes “isolated initiative”.
Today, it must be understood that Toulouse is downgraded and is not one of the labeled cities that will become major research universities. The risk is that Toulouse will become a small provincial town as far as academics and research are concerned, whereas it is the second city in France in terms of scientific productivity after Paris.
Christian Gollier, Director General of the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE)
The new university in the Shanghai 2023 ranking ?
“Toulouse Tech University aims to join the top-100 of the Shanghai ranking“, says Christian Gollier. Philippe Raimbault, president of the Federal University of Toulouse, is working on a single site.
We finalized the statutes at the end of July. They will be submitted from the end of August to the authorities concerned for validation. If all goes as we hope, the new University of Toulouse will be created, still in federal form, on 1 January next. It would replace the current federal university.
Philippe Raimbault, President of the Federal University of Toulouse
One of the challenges of the ongoing transformation is international visibility. “We do not yet know if the new structure could be classified in place of the other establishments, but we hope so”says Philippe Raimbault.
