The three gendarmes from the Ouistreham territorial brigade arrived “the first on the scene, entrusted to the gendarmerie of Caen (Calvados), given that they were two minutes away” from the incident. In fact, on Saturday August 13, 2022, a fire broke out in Blainville-sur-Orne, around 4:30 p.m. “in a square near the greenway depending from Caen to the sea”. “They then tried to put out the fire”
“With the means at hand”
Armed with a fire extinguisher, the three gendarmes did “with the means at hand, complete the gendarmerie of Caen, to prevent the spread of fire”.
Once the extinguisher was consumed, they tried to put it out with their feet.
Then the firefighters arrived, and “drowned the rest with a spear. It is estimated that 1,000 m2 of vegetation was burned. »
Because of a cigarette butt?
The fire would “probably still be due to a cigarette butt”, thinks the gendarmerie of Caen. Indeed, Wednesday August 10, five hectares of wood had been destroyed in Maizet, “probably” because of a cigarette butt. “Avoid smoking and under no circumstances throw your cigarette butts on the ground or through the window of your vehicle”, warns the Calvados gendarmerie on its social networks.
Moreover, with the drought, “the slightest spark can cause great damage”.
