SBB are withdrawing timetable cuts on commuter routes
The SBB actually wanted to thin out the commuter routes from Zurich with the next timetable change. That’s not happening now because of the high demand.

the essentials in brief
- The SBB had planned timetable cuts for connections from Zurich.
- These new timetables have now been discarded again.
- The demand picked up faster than expected, for reasons of the federal railways.
Due to the unexpectedly rapid increase in demand after the corona pandemic, SBB is withdrawing the cancellation of individual connections on commuter routes in the planned timetable change. Relief connections from Zurich to Bern and from Zurich to Lucerne are affected.
At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, the communications office of the railway company confirmed a corresponding report by the CH Media media on Wednesday.
Plans not presented until May
As recently as May, SBB announced that it was planning to cancel the relief trains from Bern at 07:10 and 16:10 and from Zurich at 06:49, as well as the departures from Lucerne at 06:20 and Zurich at 16:39.
Demand picked up faster than expected in May, SBB justified the about-face. “We have closely followed the development of demand and therefore decided that the reinforcement trains should also run during peak times in the coming year.” The SBB want to provide information about the final timetable at the end of November.
The SBB draft 2023 timetable envisages an expansion of leisure traffic in particular. There will be two direct IC connections between Geneva and Chur around the weekend. New direct connections are also planned on the Romanshorn – Interlaken route.
In addition to day-trippers, foreign travelers also benefit from SBB’s plans. The draft timetable includes a night train to Prague, which runs via Germany. According to the announcement, Leipzig and Dresden can also be reached by night train in the future.
