Silentium, tomorrow the world premiere of the Chigiana and Siena Jazz production
The Chigiana International Festival presents the new production, in world premiere, of Silentium, the new creation by Stefano Battaglia commissioned and produced by the Chigiana Academy in collaboration with Siena Jazz, Tuesday 9 August at 9.15 pm at the Teatro dei Rozzi in Siena.
A broad and innovative project, which takes its title from the homonymous poem Silentium by Osip Mandel’štam, which develops the central theme of the entire Chigiana International Festival & Summer Academy 2022 “From Silence”.
At the center of the project will be the Tabula Rasa ensemble – Chigiana Siena Jazz Ensemble – composed for the occasion by Cosimo Fiaschi on soprano sax, Sarvin Asa on cello and Nicholas Remondino on percussion – directed by Stefano Battaglia, with the extraordinary participation of Theo Bleckmann , one of the greatest interpreters of contemporary vocalism, endowed with an extraordinarily wide and versatile vocal register and Walter Prati, one of the greatest experimenters of the interaction between traditional musical instruments and new electronic instruments, a point of reference for an entire musical generation, to which will be entrusted with the electronic part.
After the great success of another original project around the theme of silence, presented in the days preceding the Chigiana International Festival, Another Silent Way, a concert held on August 1st in Piazza Provenzano in Siena with the unpublished performance of the homonymous inspired suite to the music of Miles Davis, the Chigiana-Siena Jazz synergy is renewed with a new production starring three great musicians who combine their experiences to interact around the theme of silence, with inexhaustible reflections.
«The work on silence – explains Stefano Battaglia – is extremely stimulating and meaningful for every musician. We are in fact aware that there would be no music or sound without its opposite, the matrix of his being. Silentium is based on a poem by the Russian poet Osip Mandel’štam used partly in the English translation and partly in the German translation by Paul Celan, in which, through a stupendous metaphor, Mandel’štam tells precisely this: the birth of Aphrodite, goddess of beauty – and with it the birth of music and words – from the foam of the sea, understood as absolute silence. Explaining this existential relationship between sound and silence. Telling with an image something very profound and extremely powerful for those who work all day with sound ».
Established in 2018, the Tabula Rasa ensemble is the result of the highly acclaimed course in the field of new musical languages and improvisation that combines the experiences of the Accademia Chigiana and Siena Jazz University. A variable structure, the ensemble is directed by Stefano Battaglia, who in a few years has seen the best talents from the two international institutions join his ranks, together with prestigious guests who offer an important artistic contribution to the realization of each individual project. . The course has the ambition to unite genres, break down the boundaries between genres, styles and practices, consolidate by witnessing the possible coexistence between knowing how to develop innovative expressives and links with musical tradition, an intertwining of factors at the basis of contemporaneity.
