A large contingent of emergency and rescue workers was deployed to fight the fire on the ground floor, Protection & Rescue Zurich announced on Saturday. Numerous residents were examined by the paramedics for smoke inhalation.
When the emergency services from the fire brigade and paramedics arrived, the flames were already several meters high on the ground floor of the four-story residential and commercial building. Officials from the city police and the caretaker had already started the evacuation at this point.
Eleven residents complained of breathing difficulties
While the professional fire brigade started fighting the fire, task forces wearing breathing apparatus searched the approximately 30 rented rooms and apartments to ensure that there were no other people in the building, which had become heavily smoked in the meantime. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the professional fire brigade, the spread of the fire to the floors above could be prevented.

The cause of the fire is still unclear
The cause of the fire is still unclear and is being determined by the fire investigation service of the cantonal police and detectives from the Zurich city police. The area around the scene was cordoned off by the city police and traffic was diverted.
Around three hours later, the residents were able to return to the building, although the two lower floors were severely damaged by the fire and smoke and are no longer habitable for the time being.
