Nébih: a passport is required to travel with pets
Budapest – Many people want to take their pets with them on vacation abroad. In addition to the mandatory pet passport, there are uniform rules for traveling pets in the European Union, and different countries may also impose special conditions – the National Food Chain Safety Office pointed out in its information on Tuesday.
The basic condition for transporting pets between the EU is that the animals have a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. Owners can ask the service veterinarian for help to fulfill the conditions.
That the rabies vaccination is valid if the animal already had a microchip before the vaccination and received the mandatory vaccination every year. In the case of the first vaccination, the 21-day waiting period for travel must be completed before the protection is developed – Nébih wrote.
As an example, they mention that travel to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland and Malta also requires deworming by a veterinarian. The treatment must be carried out no more than 120, but at least 24 hours before entering the destination country, which the doctor also records in the pet’s passport.
If the pet does not yet have a passport, the veterinarian will issue one based on the data entered in the animal’s vaccination book. Both documents must be present on the trip. The pet must be accompanied by the owner indicated in the passport or by a person authorized in writing by the owner. According to Nébih, it is also important to know that you cannot take more out of the country, because it is already for commercial travel, which has additional conditions.
