A new heat record was set after the weekend’s cold front
Budapest – Even after the weekend’s cold front, a new heat record was set: the night was tropical in the capital, the temperature remained above 25 degrees even in the coldest hours – the National Meteorological Service announced on its Facebook page on Monday.
They wrote: although a cold front passed over the country on Saturday, this did not cause a significant change in temperature, the weather remained several degrees warmer than average. In Budapest Lágymány, 25.4 degrees Celsius were measured even in the coolest hours, which is a new capital and national daily minimum temperature record. The previous national record on July 24 was 24.6 degrees, which was registered in the interior of Szeged in 1894. The previous minimum temperature record in the capital was 24 degrees, recorded in 1988 at the Budapest Széchenyi-hegy station.
In another post, it was announced that another cold front will arrive at dawn on Tuesday, but – as they put it – “again, drought relief is not concentrated where it should be”. From dawn, showers and thunderstorms will develop in more and more areas in the northern and western areas of Transdanubia, and then during the day the frontal precipitation system will move eastward, but it is also expected to weaken in the meantime. Especially in the southeastern counties, precipitation is likely in a few places and with only a small chance, and even there only in the evening, late at night.
It was pointed out: it is not the areas with severe drought that will receive the most precipitation, but rather more showers and thunderstorms are expected in the western counties. Precipitation amounts above 10 millimeters are conceivable there, locally even more.
The wind also picks up and strengthens along the front. Temporarily stormy gusts may also occur in the vicinity of thunderstorms. The temperature will drop behind the front, but a heat wave of 33-38 degrees can still be expected in Tiszántúl.
The national chief medical officer originally ordered the third-degree heat alert from Wednesday until midnight on Saturday, but later extended it until midnight on Tuesday.
According to the forecast of the meteorological service, peak values close to 40 degrees may occur again in the coming days, and minimums above 20 degrees are also expected in some places.
Another cold front is to be expected, with which the heat wave can be significantly moderated.
