the conflict in Ukraine will end when Russia and the United States conclude a peace treaty
The Russian-Ukrainian conflict ends when Russia and the United States sign a peace treaty. On this occasion, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in conversation with Reuters.
“Because Russian security guarantees are needed, this can only be completed with peace talks between Russia and America,” Orban said.
A few months before the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, Russia initiated a dialogue on mutual security guarantees with the United States and NATO. In particular, Moscow demanded that the alliance refuse to join the East and not be admitted to NATO and Georgia.
According to Orban, the strategy that the West has chosen in confronting Russia is probably in the belief that Kyiv will defeat Moscow with a NATO attack, and that Western sanctions will weaken Russia and cause more damage than the very acceptance these sanctions imposed.
However, according to Orban, this strategy failed – for example, due to the deviation in energy prices, on the contrary, they rose too much. “It is clear that the war cannot be won in this way,” said the Hungarian prime minister. In addition, according to Orban, Ukraine will never win in a conflict with Russia, because the Russian army has “asymmetric superiority.”
“The new strategy should be to focus on the peace talks and accept the proposal for a peace treaty, [а не на том]to undermine,” says Orban.
After the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, Hungary refused to use it in Ukraine. “We will not allow transport to be drawn into the conflict – we will not bring troops and weapons into Ukraine. <…> Hungary comes first for us,” Orban said. Hungary also refused to take a decision against Russia’s energy sector.
