Palermo tennis tournament: the classics from Szobszló compete in Sicily
Palermo – Anna Bondár and Udvardy Panna play against each other in the round of 16.
Anna Bondár from Szoboszló reached the round of 16 on Tuesday at the $250,000 (HUF 100 million) clay court women’s tennis tournament in Palermo.
The Hungarian player, ranked 50th in the world rankings as the best of her career, traveled to Sicily after the semifinals of last week’s WTA tournament in Budapest, where she clashed with the French Clara Burel (134th) in the opening round of the Palermo tournament, against whom she had an all-time record of 1-1.
In the first set of their third battle, there were a total of five breaks, and since the 25-year-old player from Hajdúszoboszló SE came out better, he took the lead after 45 minutes.
In the second game, Bondár took the service game of his 21-year-old rival at the very beginning and when he was leading 4:2, and although Burel was able to break at 5:2 after parrying a match point, Bondár was able to celebrate the advance after 1 hour and 34 minutes.
After Anna Bondár, Udvardy Panna also reached the round of 16, where the two Hungarians play against each other.
On Tuesday, the first round opponent of Udvardy, who is ranked 108th in the world ranking, was Lucrezia Stefanini, who started with a free card and appeared in front of the domestic audience, who is 194th in the WTA ranking.
According to the tournament’s website, Udvardy turned the tables on his tennis rival in first place, reached break points in all of Stefanini’s service games, and because he was able to take advantage of them three times, he gained the advantage after 42 minutes.
The 24-year-old Italian player rallied for the second game, taking Udvardy’s service game at 2:2 and confidently holding his own until 5:4. At that time, the Hungarian tennis player saved and broke four set points, and Stefanini was able to win a point after only one serve in the shortened game, so the Hungarian player could celebrate at the end of the 1 hour and 51 minute match.
From the 1st round (to reach the round of 16):
Udvardy Panna – Lucrezia Stefanini (Italian) 6:1, 7:6(4)
Anna Bondár (7th) – Clara Burel (France) 6:4, 6:4
