Not only the girls, the organizers also excelled at the World Cup
The city of Cívis was once again on the mark, the U17 Women’s World Championship, which has finally ended, was organized by the organizers of Debrecen in a fleet, hand in hand with the domestic and international federations. As we have already written, the Hungarian team ended up in sixth place in the tournament after losing to the Australians 72-52 in the classification. The gold battle was won by the United States of America by defeating Spain 84-62, and the members of the Canadian national team, who had previously surpassed ours, were able to stand on the third step of the podium.
Andreas Zagklis, the secretary general of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), later told Hajdú-bihari Naplo that it was an honor to be here in Debrecen. – We are in the middle of a three-year, wonderful journey on behalf of the association, we are grateful for the great cooperation with the city. I think the event exceeded all our expectations, the players gave a great performance on the field. Certain teams even exceeded their usual level, getting something extra out of themselves. It was a great experience, and for the U17s, we can also talk about the first world-level competition. I can say that I will never forget Debrecen – he said.
The general secretary also praised the work of the organizers for carrying this project through. – My whole team can say that this is really such a place in the junior world, and
we are very happy that we could celebrate the most important event of the year in women’s youth basketball here today
– highlighted the final, adding that during the cooperation the two sides learn more and more every year, so they can’t wait for next year’s U19 Men’s World Championship, which will also be held in Debrecen.
István Becsky, chairman of the organizing committee, told our paper that they received great feedback from the teams regarding the arrangement. – I think we have completed a very successful event. The federation leaders of all national teams said they had a great time, just like last year’s U19 Women’s World Cup, even though the coronavirus left its mark on it. Fortunately, the current participants were able to see more of Debrecen. I think that the quality of the tournament has increased compared to last year, and we are confident that we will be able to raise the standard even further at the 2023 age-group World Cup – when the U19 boys will visit the city of Cívis. The Hungarian girls fulfilled the preliminary expectations to the maximum, they worked fantastically in the training camp and during the tournament, hats off to them.
By making it to the top eight teams, they did a great job.
Against Canada, the team was a bit overexcited, but you have to realize that the North Americans are slightly ahead of us. In the end, the Australians proved to be better than ours in the match for 5th place, but I think that Péter Völgyi’s students did everything for success and could leave Debrecen satisfied with this sixth place – evaluated the Cívisváros sports director last week.
The Debrecen organizers will be able to use the experiences of last year and the current one next year as well, since Debrecen will host the 2023 U19 Boys’ World Championship.
