Párbeszéd elected new co-chairs
Budapest – On Sunday, the Párbeszéd’s renewal congress elected parliament member Rebeka Szabó and faction leader Bence Tordai as co-presidents of the party. The two former co-chairs, Mayor Gergely Karácsony and Member of Parliament Tímea Szabó, are not running for the position again.
At the online press conference following the election, Rebeka Szabó said that the party confirmed its belief that sustainability and environmental problems must be addressed. The politician emphasized that every person has the right to healthy food, clean air and drinking water, as well as to live in a safe and healthy environment.
He stated that they are working to build a green Hungary and to give political representation to the green movement in Hungary. He added that this requires socially sensitive and green thinking.
The co-president emphasized that they are part of the left-wing traditions that say that it is necessary to act and criticize the nature-destroying wild capitalism that often exploits the workers.
Listing their ideas, he mentioned that everyone should have equal access to healthcare and education. An answer must be given to the problems that women face during their social life, he continued. Rebeka Szabó called it important to stand up for equal opportunities for Gypsies and to fight against all such groups, such as pressured LGBTQ people, for whom the Hungarian government and society “do not provide equal rights”.
Finally, he announced that, in preparation for the European Parliament elections, they would soon request admission to the European Green Party family.
Bence Tordai said that they want a green Europe and a green Hungary in it, where more and more people know how the food crisis is connected to the climate and ecological crisis, the “misery” of rural Hungary to “land grabbing”, popular diseases to environmental pollution, the energy crisis and with the “misguided economic and foreign policy”.
The task of the elected presidency will be to strengthen the green pole and strengthen Dialogue as a party in the next two years, he says. He emphasized that the green idea, the vision of a solidary green Hungary, must gain more space within the opposition cooperation.
Finally, he spoke about the fact that the former co-presidents are still “on board”, because Tímea Szabó will once again be the leader of the parliamentary faction of the party, and Gergely Karácsony will lead the working group managing the preparations for the 2024 municipal elections within the party.
