Debrecen protects the values of the past
The purpose of the City of Debrecen County is to protect the built-in values that define the city’s history and identity, to preserve the city’s architectural heritage and image for future generations, and to shape it in a high-quality way, taking into account the general architectural environment and culture, and the attitude-shaping elements of architectural culture – announced the City Hall of Debrecen.
On December 14, 2017, the General Assembly of Debrecen County Municipality placed another 279 properties under local protection with its decree on the protection of the settlement image. The purpose of the decree is to preserve the city’s traditions, architectural values, tourist attractions, and the image values of the city. As part of its responsibilities, our municipality continuously conducts the architectural value assessment and assessment of properties with outstanding professional thoroughness. Since the adoption of the decree – at the initiative of the city administration – a detailed – nearly 8,000 page – value assessment of the affected properties has also been carried out. Following the opinion process of the state chief architect, it is expected that the city’s General Assembly will be able to expand the properties worthy of protection this year. In accordance with past practice, a municipality-owned but protected building is sold, so it can only be sold for years if it is burdened with renovation obligations. After the completion of the ongoing architectural value assessment procedure and the expansion of the range of protected buildings, the Debrecen County Municipality’s goal is to provide a renovation fund in the 2023 municipal budget that will support the preservation and renovation of the architectural values of the townhouses.
The house at Hatvan utca 42 received a yellow demolition permit on May 23, 2022. Although the property is not under local protection, László Papp, the mayor of the City of Debrecen with County Rights, initiated it at Cívis Ház Zrt. with the CEO so that no demolition work is carried out on the property. In parallel, the Debrecen County Municipal Government will sell the property in the context of a public auction burdened with renovation obligations.
