Hope for Mosilana in Brno: the investor is counting on its partial preservation
The owner of the former Mosilana factory complex announced an architectural assignment for five architectural studios. Compared to the original assignment from 2019, which originally demolished all the buildings in the area, he is now working with their partial preservation. In addition to the architects, he also invited representatives of the city and the National Institute of Monuments to a professional discussion right in the area.

According to the representative of the investor Jiří Filip, the new assignment brings a different perspective on the reconstruction of the area. “We selected other architectural offices for processing, which approach it in such a way that the genius loci is preserved. They take into account the opinion of the public, but also the technical condition of the buildings,” said Filip. Compared to the original assignment, the new one also includes original buildings or their fragments. However, the investor’s representative drew attention to the maximum possibilities of using some buildings. “For example, Vlhká 21 has all the ceilings and columns made of wood. Its reconstruction and adaptation to current trends would mean too much intervention, moreover beyond economic possibilities,” added Filip.
As Deník previously reported, against the investor’s original intention to demolish and rebuild the entire site, along with some policies of the National Monument Institute. Last year, he submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Culture to memorialize some of the buildings in the area in order to preserve the legacy of the history of Moravian Manchester, as the Brno factories were nicknamed. “The Institute of Monuments stands by the proposal submitted to the Ministry of Culture and there is no reason to return to it yet,” Zdeněk Vácha, director of the Brno branch of the National Institute of Monuments, commented on the current events. He added that the previous expert discussion can serve as a guide for the investor to find the optimal level of preservation preservation of the historical site The results of expert studies and architectural designs can also be taken into account in the proceedings by the Ministry of Culture.

Councilor Filip Chvátal, who was against the demolition of the site, welcomed the change in the investor’s intention. “I was pleasantly surprised, architectural offices think similarly to us. We are happy that things are moving in the same direction, discussions are also moving with the representatives of the monument department on industrial history,” Chvátal added. However, he pointed out that he remains reserved because the project is still open.
It will depend mainly on the decision of the Ministry of Culture, which will determine the necessary level of preservation of historical buildings. According to his representative, the owner of the complex hopes that the ministry will consider the new architectural proposals. “From the total number of five proposals, we will select two winning ones, to which the general public will also be able to add their comments. We will count on the opinions of the locals, who are already contacting us,” said Filip. However, it is not yet clear when the ministry will decide on the fate and final form of the complex, which includes forty-eight buildings and is spread over a plot of land measuring four hectares.
