Interchange and tunnel. See how VMO Ostravská will look like
The Černovický section will start after the intersection with Líšeňská street, then it will follow the route of the existing road II/373 past Zetor and the Sako waste incineration plant. The current Jedovnická and Bělohorská streets will be replaced by the Bělohorská level crossing, which will allow passage from the northern side of the city ring road. “The Ostrava radial will connect to the Líšeňská interchange, which is part of the construction of the I/42 Brno Velký měšídská okruh Vinohrady. These two buildings connect the southern and northern edges of the city and will enable smooth traffic to the D1 highway in the direction of Ostrava and in the opposite direction to Svitavy,” explained Lucie Trubelíková, spokesperson for the Directorate of Roads and Highways.

Large city circuit: Ostrava radial
* The stretch over two and a half kilometers long will include three level crossings.
* It will include a hundred-meter tunnel under Olomoucka Street.
* The goal is to divert traffic from the busy Gajdošová and Svatopluková streets in Brno’s Židenice.
* The beginning of the construction was planned by the road workers in four years, now they are waiting for the zoning decision.
* It should be completed in seven years, according to preliminary estimates, the costs will rise to almost four billion crowns.
Drivers will drive along Bělohorská Street in two lanes in each direction, the route will continue at a crossing called the Ostrava Radial. You will play a key role in Brno’s traffic situation. “The node will ensure the connection of territories or city parts to a higher communication system or subsequent connection to the central areas of the city. Diverting traffic to the ring road will significantly improve traffic in today’s exposed parts of Brno,” added Trubelíková.
The movement of traffic to the eastern part of the Great City Ring Road will primarily relieve the residents of Brno’s Židenice. Currently, drivers mainly use the bridge in Otakar Ševčíka street, then continue towards Králov Pole via Gajdošova and Svatoplukova streets. “We are looking forward to the start of construction. As far as I know, Gajdošova is now one of the busiest roads in the South Moravian Region. People’s lives will be made easier not only by less noise, but also by less dust,” said Židenice mayor Aleš Mrázek for Deník Rovnost.
After the off-level Ostravská radial, the section will connect via a flyover over the tram and railway tracks, then continue through a hundred-meter tunnel under Olomoucka street. The project will include the construction of cycle paths, the improvement of road I/50 and the diversion of roads II/373 and II/374. In the direction of the southern part of Brno, it will continue via the Průmyslová interchange and the radial, that is, the expressway connecting the ring road to the highways, which connects the Great City Ring Road with Černovická Terrace. “Any change in the frequency of cars will be beneficial for Černovice,” commented the local mayor Petra Quittová.
Compensation due to the construction of the VMO in Brno: things are getting greener among the block houses in Stará osada
The Ostrava Radial ends behind the bridge over Havraní Street. Three years ago, the regional authority issued an opinion agreeing with the evaluation of the impact on the environment in the section from the Vinohrady tunnel to the D1 highway. The intention of the project was approved by the Ministry of Transport in June 2020, now the state road authorities are applying for the issuance of a zoning decision. “This solution will ease traffic not only in the adjacent Černovice, but in the entire city. Traffic will be significantly smoother,” commented transport councilor Petr Kratochvíl.
However, not all Brno residents agree with the large-scale construction. “If someone thinks that the construction of the circuit will make cars disappear by themselves, they are unfortunately mistaken. If drivers do not start to limit themselves, there will be more. Gajdošova must be narrowed, only then will there be fewer cars on it. Of course, this would also work without a circuit,” criticized the project, for example, Richard Mach from Brno. Construction is planned to start in four years, and it should be completed in 2029. The estimated price so far exceeds three and a half billion crowns without tax, the funding will be shared by the Directorate of Roads and Motorways with Brno.
