Index – Domestic – In Budapest, thousands of broken pipes can cause temporary water shortages every year
The thing about a broken pipe is that it only causes leakage, sometimes the water roars spectacularly, but it can even wash away the asphalt.
After reporting the error, our investigators always rush to the site as soon as possible to determine the suspected nature and severity of the error
– announced the Capital Water Works.
Based on the results of the investigation and the knowledge of the entire network, they will determine whether the repair work involves a water shutdown and how many people may be affected by the lack of water during the work.
The Capital Waterworks is struggling with a labor shortage
“Unfortunately, the labor shortage affecting many sectors in our country, which increases during the summer holidays, also causes serious problems for our company,” they reported.
It happens that a smaller brigade working on troubleshooting in Buda has to be immediately redirected to a more serious pipe break on the Pest side.
In the current, trying heat, one of their biggest dilemmas is the question of whether to immediately shut off the broken pipe section and thereby cause a water shortage in many households, or to let the water flow in the public area until the repair can be carried out. During a heat alarm, the latter solution is usually chosen, as long as there is no threat of serious damage from the spilled water.
They helped settlements with water shortages
During the heat alert, priority was given to helping agglomeration settlements that were left without water outside their service area. They contributed to alleviating the water shortage by providing maximum water intake opportunities for local water utility service providers at the transfer points to the neighboring settlements, and by opening fire hydrants for carrying water. Most recently, water restrictions were introduced in Gödöllő and Veresegyház to reduce the increased water consumption due to the heat.
The company added that it is doing everything it can to maintain the continuity of the water supply. And if a line fails, they try to repair it as soon as possible. However, the number of pipe breaks – which in Budapest is 1,000 per year and 3 per day – is increasing, and unfortunately this will not be the case in the future either, as according to the Waterworks, the resources available for renovations have been limited for quite some time.
