Ten proposals for transport and against pollution in Toulouse
After the Mobility Forum organized in May in Toulouse, several associations and collectives made ten proposals to improve transport and fight against pollution.
A Mobility Forum was held on March 19 in Toulouse. It was organized by several associations and collectives including two feet two wheels, Friends of the Earth and Alternatiba. Three months later, the organizers unveil a list of ten proposals for the development of transport other than the car and to control pollution.
They regret that The 3rd line of the metro, which keeps on being announced and constantly shifted, is gradually siphoning off all of the city’s budgets and its budget will constantly increase with the cost of raw materials. The Réseau express vélo (REV) has been postponed again, from 2026 to 2030. The extensions of the structuring bus lines beyond the outskirts are now postponed after the entry into service of the 3rd line. Surprisingly, only major projects still find funding, which nevertheless amounts to hundreds of millions of euros. »
The organizers of the Mobility Forum believe that “ the Toulouse conurbation has entered a vicious circle : more roads, more cars, more traffic jams, more pollution, less budgets for public transport and soft modes. “However, it is well known that in the field of mobility, supply creates demand. It is a virtuous circle that must be set in motion, ”they write then.
Proposals to develop modes of transport other than the car in Toulouse
The organizers of the Mobility Forum have asked to put forward ten proposals “which could be quickly implemented by the Metropolis” of Toulouse.
1. Redirect to public transport and the construction of cycling infrastructure the budgets currently earmarked for the construction of new road projects
2. Rebalancing the public transport offer throughout the conurbation, developing new Linéo lines and a real RER
3. Integrate all public transport solutions in the agglomeration in a single offer and pricing (bus, metro, train, self-service bicycles) as exists in the Paris area.
4. Recognize walking as a mode of transportation in its own right by developing, after diagnosis, a real pedestrian plan for the metropolis. This plan includes the pedestrianization of the surroundings of schools and the separation between pedestrian flows and vehicle flows.
5. Accelerate the deployment of a network of real cycle paths through tactical urban planning by taking over lanes reserved for motorized vehicles.
6. Reduce traffic speeds 30 km/h in town and 70 km/h on the ring road and enforce them for greater safety, to reduce fuel consumption and atmospheric pollution.
7. Promote the practice of vehicle sharing by reserving a ring road lane for carpooling.
8. Widely educate the inhabitants by involving all the players in the territory so that they integrate mobility constraints into their daily operations and offer genuine incentive measures with the support of local authorities.
9. Encourage behavior change reinstating the car-free day and offering days of free public transport.
10. Generalize resident parking to the city as a whole and allocating its revenue to the financing of alternative modes of transport.
