Charging tips for the trip to Denmark – Norwegian Electric Car Association
No problems so far for our sample electric driver in Billund, but it will probably get worse when the Norwegian joint holiday kicks in. Here are our tips for a smooth electric car holiday in Denmark.
Of all the countries in the world, Legoland is the most important holiday destination for many. But can you go there or travel around the rest of Denmark by electric car?
Yes, of course. But when the Norwegian joint holiday kicks in in less than a week, it can become cramped for charging space in some places.
At least if everyone who has postponed the Danish holiday for several years, is going to Denmark – and in the meantime has bought an electric car.

Three times as many on a Nordic holiday…
Every year, the Norwegian Electric Car Association conducts the survey «Electric Car List» for members of the association and other electric drivers, and in this year’s survey, more than 16,500 people answered the survey.
The answers that have come in from this year’s survey give a clear indication that the summer of 2022 will break previous records in terms of electric car holidays.
And it is especially those who are planning a holiday abroad who have become more numerous, of course due to the two corona-shaped summer holidays we have left behind.
This year, as many as 14.6 per cent answer that they are going on an electric car holiday in the Nordic countries.
Last year, only five percent answered the same.
The survey «Elbilisten 2022»:
Almost 65 percent plan electric car holidays
In other words, we are talking about a tripling of Norwegian electric drivers on a Nordic trip.
Below we have therefore collected some tips for you who are going on holiday by electric car with the fraternal people in the south.
Check in advance if you can stay overnight
We must start with a cautious warning: The charging network in Denmark is far from as well developed as in Norway.
The Danes have not yet set the big electric car light, so when many Norwegians crash down to Denmark in the electric car, it can offer a little friction.
Legoland in particular is a magnet for Norwegian families with children, and more and more of them arrive in electric cars.
But also close around Legoland there are many other attractions like hiking families to say the least. Throughout this area, there may be competition for the publicly available charging stations this summer.
Therefore, our advice would be to check at the place you are going to stay overnight, preferably in advance.
Charging overnight is the simplest form of charging and reduces both time consumption and stress on holidays, the goal being to charge the batteries in a completely different way than the electric car battery.
You must know this before you go on an electric car holiday to Sweden and Denmark
On holiday in DK now: – No problem so far
The new electric car driver Andreas Tandberg (48) has just arrived on holiday with his family at Legoland and Lalandia.
– I think it goes surprisingly well. All the chargers work and there is surprisingly little queuing. Get electric cars in Billund. Haven’t people taken the chance on electric car holidays? All the better for us who took the chance, says Tandberg.
He uses the Electric Car Association’s blue charging chip when charging in Denmark, and reports that it has worked excellently.

In some places you may be fined while charging: Remember the dial!
However, Tandberg does not rule out that there will be more pressure at the charging stations when the Norwegian joint holiday begins.
In addition, he has a tip for other Norwegians who need to be quickly charged in Denmark. There is a certain risk of being fined, at least at the fast charging station he visited recently:
– A hair in the soup is that you MUST have a dial when you charge in Denmark otherwise you will be fined. I had no idea. There were a lot of people who were fined at the fast chargers in Nørager, says Tandberg, who in the last minute, fortunately for him, managed to charm himself out of the fine he was about to incur.
According to the Electric Car Association’s experience, it is mandatory to use a parking dial when charging at Ionity’s lightning charger stations in Denmark.
The maximum limit for standing there is reportedly once, and if you do not use a dial, you risk a fine of 1100 Danish kroner, even if you stand on a charging station and charge, and pay for charging.
A Norwegian electric car driver commented on the following on Facebook after this case was published there:
“For God’s sake, you must warn people on Danish holidays against the cynical system of parking fines, which are imposed on charged cars at Ionity’s stations. DKK 1,100 in fines, imposed while the car is being charged in a dedicated Ionity space along the main road. »

Low charge at Lalandia
If you are lucky and get your car charged at the huge water park Lalandia near Legoland, it can be very expensive. And you should have good luck if the chargers they have there are available.
Although Lalandia is super popular with families with children, this is perhaps the player that excels with the worst service for electric drivers.
If you rent a holiday home there, parking in front of the house is included in the price, but you will not be allowed to leave the electric car there.
If you need to charge, you must borrow a charging chip at the reception and pay for the electricity per time you use the chip.
Chargers are only available with 22 kW. If you are one of the lucky ones who gets charged, it can be very expensive when you also have to pay parking fees.

Electric car to Billund
22 kW or 11 kW is a common effect for normal charging points in Denmark, and there are rarely many points in one place.
Therefore, you may want to use the Electric Car Association’s app, the Electric Car App, to check which power is available and how many there are, so that you can experimentally calculate the time spent.

Version 5.0 is finally out and ready for download.
There is only 1 – one – fast charger near Billund.
In the parking lots at Legoland, however, there are a handful of 22 kW charging points. So here it quickly becomes a battle for glory.
So the advice is: Charge when you can and have time for it – and do not bet everything on one charger.

Legoland Dangers: Consider going to the open Tesla charging stations
Tesla has opened some of its supercharger stations also in Denmark, and all electric drivers thus have the opportunity to charge these.
You have her the map of the Danish Tesla stations that are open to everyoneat the time of writing, seven of their stations in Denmark are accessible to everyone.
If you come by boat to Fredrikshavn or Hirtshals, the nearest publicly accessible supercharger park is on Hjørring along the E45, fairly close to both ferry ports.
The nearest open Tesla charging station near Lalandia / Legoland is the one at Herning, about sixty miles north of Billund.
Here they have 16 superchargers which all charge with an output of up to 150 kW.
Note that Ionity also has a charging station with five chargers near Aarhus, about nine miles east of Legoland.
Charging tips for the Danish holiday:
- Start with the most fully equipped car when driving on the ferry in Norway.
- Book accommodation where you can charge at night.
- Use the Charging Club’s chip for easy payment.
- Use the Charging Club’s app (or other apps) to find charging places.
- See available chargers for power before planning the stop.
- It is a good idea to bring a cable for slow charging (socket) and a cable for normal charging (type 2). You do not need a separate cable for fast charging, the cable is already fixed on the fast charger.
- Plan ahead, saving you time and outside stress. Download the Electric Car App with a charging map and route planner for electric cars, and plan the itinerary with a charging stop in advance. You are prepared for most things if you also find alternative charging points, or an alternative route, in case of charging queues or defective chargers.
- And: Be kind to your electric car friends. Are you on one of the few fast chargers – charge to 80 percent.
