Finland and Sweden conclude accession negotiations at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Monday (July 4, 2022), as agreed by NATO leaders last week at their Madrid Summit [on June 28-30]. “Both countries have formally reaffirmed their willingness and ability to fulfill the political, legal and military obligations and commitments for NATO membership,” said a document released by NATO.
“Following the conclusion of the talks, the Allies will sign the Accession Protocols for Finland and Sweden at NATO Headquarters on Tuesday (July 5, 2022),” it added. “The Accession Protocols will then go to all NATO countries for ratification, according to their national procedures,” the statement said.
On 18 May last year, Helsinki and Stockholm presented their application to join NATO. Both countries were expected to receive an invitation to access the bloc at the Madrid summit, but Turkey vetoed the process. On 28 June, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg held a meeting to assess the countries’ entry into the North Atlantic Organization.
After the meeting in Madrid, the Turkish leader lifted the ban on Sweden and Finland’s membership in the bloc.
