After the big game in the German Bundesliga for BC Göttingen and in the European Championship qualifiers for Norway, NBA teams have opened their eyes to Harald Eika Frey from Kjelsås.
The 25-year-old lost his chance to appear before the NBA teams after finishing his college career in 2020 due to covid-19, but has not given up on the dream of the world’s best basketball league.
Well, the road may be a little shorter.
As far as VG understands, there has been a dialogue between agents for the Norwegian star and a large team on the west coast of the USA about games in this year’s «Summer League».
NBA Summer League is a showcase for players like diapers drafted night to June 24thand other players from Europe who are currently picking up for the NBA teams.
Unfortunately, the first of this year’s summer matches crashed, California Classicwith Norway’s important international match against Denmark on July 3, and as one of Norway’s most important players, national team manager Mathias Eckhoff is happy that Frey chose the national team.
– It’s absolutely fun, that. It is good that players want to choose Norway. Harald is important for the national team commitment, says Eckhoff.
These days, Frey is back in his native country after finishing the season in Germany, with full focus on the international match on July 3rd.
– I have been looking forward to this match here for so incredibly long, ever since I found out that it should be in Oslo. I have not played in the east since I won the NC with Centrum Tigers in 2016, so it is a dream to be able to play international matches in front of family and friends, Frey told VG earlier in June.
Denmark is on the opposite half of the field in what you want to be a folk festival in Jordal Amphitheater in Oslo. It is already clear that it will be an audience record for a Norwegian international match. It is the group final in the first European Championship qualification for the European Championship in 2025.
Norway leads the group ahead of Kosovo and Denmark, but must win to be guaranteed promotion to the next qualifying round.
Frey stands with 24.7 points per game – most of all players in the qualifiers.
In Germany he has averaged 10.6 points per game, while for Oviedo in Spain before the transfer to the Bundesliga he scored 16 points per game.
In college, he was also a big star.
For the Montana State Bobcats, he was hailed with the Norwegian national anthem before his last home game. That says a lot about the status he got in Bozeman, Montana.
Frey has a contract with Göttingen for one more season, and if he continues to play at the same level, it is natural to look towards the EuroLeague – or the NBA’s recruitment league G League.
An invitation to the Summer League is at least a good indication that there is interest in the accurate Norwegian in the state.
