From Vienna a 50-point strategy against nuclear threats (25/06/2022)
An unequivocal condemnation of “any nuclear threat, whether explicit or implicit and underlying the circumstances”, which responds directly to the nuclear intimidation of Russia: from the first Conference deStates parties to the Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty (TPNW) comes the strongest and most explicit multilateral condemnation ever of the threat to use nuclear weapons.
There “Vienna Declaration” was approved by acclamation and with full consensus and demonstrates that there is a new global alliance that uses the TPNW Treaty framework to reduce the risks of nuclear war, defining concrete and collective steps to end the era of nuclear weapons. A new alliance of 65 States Parties to the Treaty, other supporting States, survivors of nuclear detonations, international organizations, parliamentarians, young financial institutions and civil society.
The first meeting of the members of the TPNW after its entry into force he had to go through the steps to make the Treaty truly operational. But the comparison between the 83 States present (a dozen observing States not Parties to the Treaty, among which Italy was missing, however) led to other tangible results. States parties have made decisions on the key condemnation of recent nuclear threatson the start of work for the creation of a trust fund to support injured people from the impact of nuclear explosions, on the establishment of a scientific advisory boardon fixing a deadline of 10 years for the destruction of nuclear weapons and on the adhesion of other countries to the TPNW in order to stop the threats, war and nuclear arms race.
These decisions were based on the testimony and on the experience lived by those who know firsthand the impact of nuclear weapons and the Action Plan also stresses the important principle of ‘no decision that concerns us, without listening to our voices’ and ensure that those most affected are more involved in the decision-making and implementation processes of the Treaty rules. “Since 2017 we have a legal rule that prohibits nuclear weapons, thanks to the efforts of international civil society – he underlines Francesco VignarcaCampaign Coordinator of the Peace Disarmament Network – e from today there is also the strategy that will lead us to that result. The innovative Vienna Action Plan, developed in 50 pointsit outlines the concrete steps to prevent states with nuclear weapons from using them and to progress towards their elimination ”.
“Nuclear weapons must be eliminated as soon as possible. The Vienna Conference once again underlined how much working together civil society, associations, active activists and governments leads to concrete results – highlights Daniele Santi president of Senzatomica – We will continue to work by demonstrating how effective and powerful this public-private partnership is. I am sure that too in Italy together we will succeed in making nuclear disarmament a public issue and that, as happened for the banning of anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions, it will be decisive for their total elimination ».
“We will not stop until the last state has acceded to the Treaty, the last warhead has been dismantled and destroyed and nuclear weapons have not been totally eliminated. from Earth, ”says the Vienna Declaration.
