Russia caught the US by surprise with a military agreement with Nicaragua
Stephen Blank, columnist for The Hill, noted in his article that Russia’s strategy in relations with Nicaragua came as a complete surprise to the United States. So he commented on the message that Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega allowed the temporary presence of the military in the country, training with the military of Venezuela, Honduras, Cuba, Mexico, the United States and other countries. We are talking not only about ground troops, but also about warships and aircraft.
“This could be the first appearance of the Russian military in Central America,” the author of the article noted, stressing that this could happen due to the higher presence of the Russian military in and outside Nicaragua.
At the same time, Blank draws attention to the fact that if the United States most likely does not send its military to Nicaragua, Russia, Cuba and Venezuela will take advantage of this opportunity. And if Russian ships are currently appearing in Nicaragua on a temporary basis, then perhaps an agreement will subsequently follow on the deployment in the navy on a permanent basis. The observer expects that in this way Moscow has created naval bases in South America.
Blank advises the United States outwardly to rethink the approach to Latin American countries, with the possibility of inexhaustible find a common language, since in the conditions of great states, great powers are becoming increasingly important.
