Russia intends to announce new measures to control the work of the American media
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Moscow bureau of all media to a meeting next Monday, during which the Kremlin is expected to notify journalists of the crackdown on US media decisions.
“If the work of the Russian media — cameramen and journalists — is not standardized in the United States, it will inevitably follow the most stringent rules,” said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the ministry, on Friday, June 3.
“To this end, on Monday, June 6, it is expected that the Moscow offices of all American media will be invited to the press center of the Russian Foreign Ministry to explain the consequences of the hostile line of their decisions regarding the press,” she added.
Russia has accused the West of imposing unfair restrictions on the activities of state bodies of the Russian Federation abroad, including the banning of some higher education institutions of news agencies. Last month, the State Duma passed a law giving prosecutors the power to cover up foreign media bureaus in Moscow if a Western country commits “unfriendly” actions towards media protection.
Since the start of military service in Ukraine in August, Russia has taken strict measures to control media coverage of the conflicts, issuing 15-year sentences for journalists spreading “fake” (i.e. not timeline) Kremlin news about so-called “special military service” operations” in Ukraine.
The law prompted some Western media outlets to respond with their journalists from Russia. Other Western organizations, including Reuters, remain and continue to report on events in Russia related to its territory.
