Toulouse: a 64-meter pike painted on the wall of the Guilhemery bridge
Sandra Guilbot alias Sandrot, a young painter from Marseilles, undertook a 64-meter fresco on the edge of the canal at Port Guilhemery.
From the bank, we can see the artist, armed with several large paintbrushes. The work, still in draft form, reveals the head of a huge pike with bright eyes. 33-year-old painter, Sandra Guilbot alias Sandrot, undertook a fresco 64 meters long and 5 meters high on the hopper of the Guilhemery bridge, on the edge of the canal.
After a call for tenders launched by the City of Toulouse in 2021 to embellish this gray and concrete wall on this part of the Canal du Midi, this young artist from Marseille was selected by applying the theme “the pike of the canal”.
“I specialize in contemporary painting, particularly animal, explains Sandra, very sensitive to the animal cause. I also usually define murals that I like to describe as “a bit wild in an urban art version. I like this way of painting directly on the wall which recalls the artistic expression of the Middle Ages”.
Pike, emblematic fish of the Canal du Midi
Sandra started painting very young. At 12, she was already making two-meter murals. Studies of architecture and restoration of works followed. Today professional, the young woman created in Marseille, the company Sandrot. “We were six finalists including me with the theme of the canal pike. The vote of the people of Toulouse chose my work, perhaps for the species, emblematic fish of the canal, often misunderstood”. Completed Friday, this fresco already held the curious by its bright, deep colors and its very worked details. A “first” in Toulouse for Sandra who already loves the city.
