Alexey Savrasov (May 24, 1830 – October 8, 1897) – Russian landscape painter, itinerant. Alexei Kondratievich Savrasov was born in Moscow (12) May 24, 1830 into a merchant family. Contrary to the wishes of his father, who recorded a case adapted to the “commercial occasion”, Alexei graduated from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he was recognized as the best landscape painter. “He received the title of academician in 1854, after an exhibition at the Academy of Arts, where he presented two of his paintings “View in the vicinity of Oranienbaum” and “Sea coast in the vicinity of Oranienbaum”.
Yielding to the trends of that time, the artist paints mainly rural life. He received his first part at the competition of the Society of Art Lovers in Moscow for the landscape “Elk Island” in 1869. The largest painting by the artist – “The Caves Monastery near Nizhny Novgorod” was painted when he moved to the Volga.
In 1871-1875, living and working mostly in Moscow, Savrasov participated in exhibitions of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, in 1873-1878. – in academic exhibitions. The first traveling exhibition of the discovered paintings by Savrasov, written in the Volga region, which the public liked very much: “The flood of the Volga near Yaroslavl”, “Rooks have arrived”, “Volga near Yuryevets” …
The paintings of artists also appeared at world exhibitions – Vienna in 1873 and Paris in 1878, as well as at the All-Russian exhibition in Moscow in 1882.
In the late 1870s, Savrasov fell seriously ill, and gloomy motifs were increasingly visible in his work. During the period, the paintings “Graves over the Volga”, “Moonlight Night. Swamp”.
In recent years, the artist lived in poverty and need. Aleksey Kondratievich Savrasov died alone (September 26), October 8, 1897 in Moscow, in a hospital for the poor, was buried at the Vagankovsky cemetery.
