The refugees will also go outside of Prague. But we have to guarantee them work, accommodation and services, we think experts
Some Czech cities already have a problem accommodating other Ukrainian refugees. Let’s redistribute them or create other camps, says the expert for the Aktuálně.cz server.
The map of People in Need and the Faculty of Science of Charles University informs that many cities – not only Prague – are on the verge of their capacities in terms of receiving refugees. Aktuálně.cz, for example, read from it that there are up to 36,000 more refugees from Ukraine in Prague than the capital is able to handle schools due to the available accommodation capacities, jobs and places in primary schools.
Many refugees are still in tourist hostels in mountainous areas – according to the map, the overcrowded villages include the villages in the Krkonoše Mountains, the Šumava Mountains and the Bohemian Forest. Karlovy Vary and Pilsen are also overcrowded, where more than half of the refugees should ideally leave the cities.
The situation seems to be critical in Prague, where Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) the cabinet of Petr Fiala (ODS) has already called for the refugees to start moving around the Czech Republic. According to him, Prague is crowded. The director of the Prague Center for Social Services states that the situation in the capital is extremely critical.
He himself believes that Ukrainians are willing to move. “Of course, they prefer the capital because they know they can get a job there, they have decent accommodation and there are plenty of services, including schools. But if you guarantee them this in the city where you want to move, they may want to go to a village of ten thousand, “says Šimáček, but it is important to talk to the Ukrainians and explain it to them.
“We have the right to want refugees to go to places where it is manageable,” said Daniel Hůle from People in Need. And he warned that it might be necessary to build refugee camps. According to him, this is the absolute worst solution, because excluded localities will start to emerge.
