Brno – A huge procession with approximately two thousand participants came out of Brno’s Svobody Square today after 11:00. Students of Brno universities accompanied six allegorical cars, and thus started the Brno Majáles, which takes place after two missed years. As Michal Šamánek told ČTK on behalf of the organizers, the festival program is close to the one that was originally prepared for 2020, but it did not take place due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“80 percent of the program was based on the original one, which is being prepared for 2020. But for a long time it was not certain whether it would be possible to organize the festival, whether all collection limits would be released. Fortunately, this happened at the turn of February and March,” said Šamánek.
At the same time, the organizers also addressed the individual teams of five Brno universities, which represent the candidates for mayor and queen of Majáles. While some candidates remained the same after three years, others left school in the meantime, and the university had to recruit new candidates. “University teams started training with enthusiasm and managed to prepare everything that had been prepared for half a year,” added Šamánek.
In the procession, candidates from Masaryk University, the Technical University, Mendel University, the Veterinary University and the University of Defense presented themselves on allegorical cars, and the allegorical car for secondary schools completed the top five. Each of the cars featured a different band or musician – from Fixed Markers for Mendel University to Captain Demo for the University of Defense. The high school allegorical car was then dominated by moderator and influencer Kazma.
The procession across Pekařská Street and Mendlovo náměstí has reached the Brno Exhibition Center, where musicians will perform on three stages until midnight. The announcement of this year’s King and Queen Majáles is on the agenda before 20:00. The organizers do not comment on the number of tickets sold, they only stated that there were tens of thousands. Majáles is thus one of the largest festivals this year, which take place in the south of Moravia.
