The Prague Zoo attracts four species of lorikeets as the only one in Europe
European unique – four species of colorful lory are now on display at the Prague Zoo. Nowhere else on the old continent will visitors see so many species of so-called fig parrots. The red-headed, red-bearded and now fresh-breasted loins inhabit outdoor aviaries on the Parrot Trail. Loríček zlatouchý, which is also bred by the Prague Zoo as the only one in Europe, adorns the passage of the Rákos Pavilion.
“Lorries are extremely sensitive to the purity of food and the environment. We breed a lot of teeth on that, “ outlines the difficulty of their breeding bird curator Antonín Vaidl. “In addition, they are food specialists – they live almost exclusively in figs, at different stages of ripeness. That’s why they are sometimes called fig parrots. We also supply them with less accessible fresh figs on a regular basis. ”
When looking for food, loriats often hang from the branch upside down – just like when collecting nectar, the more well-known loriats. They are not loris, but they are not closely related to their name. In addition to a similar way of life, they are associated with them mainly by New Guinea, where both genera of these parrots occur.
Prague Zoo has been breeding puppies since the late 1990s. The breeding of the Red-bearded Lorikeet has a long tradition. More than thirty young have hatched here, the last breeding last year. There are no breeding facilities in Europe for all five living species.
