Electricity price increase for families highest in Brussels | Brussels
Brussels RegionOf all 27 EU countries, Belgian households are developing the largest increase in their electricity bill in a year. This is apparent from a report published by the European agency ACER, in which it examines the functioning of the wholesale electricity market in the European Union.
The comparison is made between the prices of February 2021 and those of February 2022. For households in Brussels, ACER shows an increase of 99 percent (in cents/kWh). It concerns the increase in all 27 capitals, far ahead of Amsterdam (64 percent) or Paris (13 percent). The revenue from the retail price consumes 30 percent (65 percent for gas).
The report comes at the request of the European Commission, the executive board of the EU. In October, the agency asked the agency to look in more detail at the pros and cons of the way the wholesale market is organised, but also to do things to improve its operation. Demand arose because of the sharp rise in energy prices, which subsequently started up due to the Russian war in Ukraine.
The agency related that its ambitions extend beyond current problems. It’s the way the market works today, fueling the EU’s green ambition. Overall, ACER does not consider it necessary to start over from a completely blank sheet. After all, the current crisis cannot be attributed to the malfunctioning of the electricity market. still: it has ensured even more strongly that the crisis will be moderated to a certain extent, it becomes. However, long-term preparation is necessary to accompany the ambitions in the field of decarbonisation.
