Prague – Josef Středula will continue to lead the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions (ČMKOS). He was re-elected by delegates at a trade union convention today. He received 153 out of 173 votes. Petr Baierl, the head of the election commission, announced the expected result. Středula did not have an opponent. He remains at the head of the largest trade union headquarters for a third four-year term.
The CMKOS covers 31 unions with several hundred thousand members. The 54-year-old Středula has been managing its headquarters since April 2014.
“There were 173 tickets and 173 were handed in, of which zero was suitable. Josef Středula received 153 votes, ie 88.4 percent,” Baierl said.
After announcing the statement, Středula thanked “for the threat”. In the last election four years ago, he won 98 percent of the vote.
Recently, there has been talk of Wednesday’s presidential ambitions. He did not officially announce the candidacy. Three years ago, he told ČTK that he was seriously considering participating in the presidential election. In February this year, the current president, Miloš Zeman, ranked him among the possible candidates.
Středula now acts as a critic of the procedure and proposals of the governing five-party coalition. He recently threatened trade union protests.
