The two-day congress of the Group of the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest faction in the European Parliament, began on Wednesday evening in Prague. Jan Olbrycht, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group, also attended the introductory briefing.
The two-day meeting of the European People’s Party began at 5.30 pm at the Marriott Hotel near Prague’s Republic Square. It was attended by a number of Czech and European politicians and other guests, led by the faction’s vice-president Jan Olbrycht.
“There will be talk mainly about security in Europe, the Czech management of the refugee wave related to the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis and other current challenges,” said Czech EPP spokesman Jan Osuch.
The Czech members of the EPP are KDU-ČSL and TOP 09. The chairwoman of TOP 09, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, spoke at the introductory briefing, which took place one hour after the official opening. MEPs Luděk Niedermayer (TOP 09), Tomáš Zdechovský and Michaela Šojdrová (both for KDU-ČŠL) also take part in the press conference.
“I am glad that such an important meeting has taken place in our country. Our goal is to defeat dictator Putin,” Pekarova said, noting the need to get rid of dependence on Russian gas and remain united.
The participants in the two-day meeting want to find suitable ways to get rid of energy dependence on Russian gas. It is also important to address the EU’s food self-sufficiency, as Ukrainian farmers do not grow normal quantities of cereals due to the war.
According to MEP Luděk Niedermayer, there is also a need to further develop foreign policy. “I am very pleased that we will start talking about common defense and foreign policy, which are lagging behind,” the MEP said.
